The Foundry System
Foundries replace furnaces on Vulcanus. They require three inputs: ore, calcite, and fuel.
Key differences from normal smelting:
- Foundries produce molten metal (liquid) instead of plates
- Molten metal pipes to casting units for plate production
- Volcanic ash is a byproduct —recycle it into calcite
- Calcite is consumed in every smelting operation
Volcanic Ash Recycling
Every foundry operation produces volcanic ash. Don't trash it —recycle:
Ash + sulfuric acid 鈫?calcite
This loop is essential. Without calcite recycling, your foundries stall. Build ash collectors and recycling assemblers alongside every foundry cluster.
Tungsten Carbide
Vulcanus is the only source of tungsten ore. Tungsten carbide is the gateway material:
Recipe: 5 tungsten ore + 5 iron plates + 5 coke 鈫?1 tungsten carbide
Tungsten carbide unlocks:
- Productivity Module 4 (+30% productivity vs PM3's +10%)

- Endgame science packs
Factory Layout
Vulcanus bases are compact by necessity:
- Foundry cluster —4-6 foundries with shared ash collection
- Recycling loop —ash 鈫?calcite, piped back to foundries
- Tungsten line —dedicated foundry for tungsten carbide
- Export station —tungsten carbide to space platform
Import list: Everything except tungsten ore and volcanic ash. Construction bots, circuits, fuel, spare parts.
What Veterans Learn the Hard Way
- Foundries need calcite —no calcite = no smelting. Prioritize ash recycling.
- Molten metal pipes —use underground pipes to cross the factory. Surface pipes block everything.
- Tungsten is the goal —everything else serves tungsten carbide production.
- Compact is mandatory —heat pipes and molten metal have limited range. Spread-out layouts fail.
